Aquamation

A Gentle and Eco-Friendly Alternative

At Cremation Society Of South Carolina, we are proud to be the First funeral home in the State of South Carolina to offer aquamation as a compassionate and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fire cremation. Also known as Aquamation, alkaline hydrolysis, or flameless cremation, aquamation uses a combination of water, heat, and a small amount of alkali to safely and respectfully advance disposition.

What is Aquamation?

Aquamation is a process that gently uses water to accelerate the natural decomposition of the body. The procedure takes place in a specialized chamber where water is heated to a high temperature and combined with alkaline solution, mimicking the natural process of decomposition that occurs in the earth. This results in the breakdown of the body into its basic elements—water, carbon, and bone—while preserving the integrity of the bone remains.

The bones are then dried and processed into a fine, ash-like substance, which can be returned to the family just like traditional cremation ashes. The entire process takes place in a respectful and environmentally conscious manner, leaving behind a minimal environmental footprint.

Why Choose Aquamation?

  • Eco-Friendly: Aquamation uses significantly less energy than flame-based cremation, making it a more sustainable option for families concerned about environmental impact.
  • Gentle and Respectful: The aquamation process is delicate and natural, offering a peaceful and respectful way to say goodbye to your loved one.
  • Non-Toxic: The process uses water and a natural alkali solution, without harmful emissions or chemicals, making it safer for the environment.
  • More Options for Memorialization: The bone remains after aquamation are very similar to those from fire cremation, offering families many of the same memorialization options, including urns, keepsakes, and other personal tributes.

How Does Aquamation Work?

  1. Preparation: After your loved one is brought into our care, the body is placed in a specially designed aquamation chamber.
  2. The Process: The chamber is filled with a water and alkali solution, then heated to around 160-180°F. Over the course of several hours, the process gently breaks down the body.
  3. The Final Steps: After the process is complete, any remaining bone fragments are carefully processed into a fine powder, which can be returned to the family in an urn or other memorial container.

A Sustainable Future

Choosing aquamation allows you to make a lasting difference for the environment, while still honoring your loved one in a meaningful way. The process uses water instead of fire, reduces emissions, and leaves no harmful pollutants behind. It is a sustainable and respectful option that aligns with the values of families who seek a greener way to say goodbye.
