Wyatt Edward Tompkins “Ed” – of Greenville, SC passed away May 16th, 2018. Born February 19th, 1928 in Taylors SC, he was the son of the late Wyatt James Tompkins and Mary Jones Tompkins. He attended Greenville High School and was drafted into Army before finishing his degree, working for a time at an infirmary ward in Japan. He completed his high school education at Blue Ridge Prep School in Hendersonville NC and spent one year playing football at Furman University before meeting his beloved wife of 69 years, Millie Center Tompkins, at Paris Mountain State Park. Ed once recalled seeing Millie “in her blue bathing suit and fell in love.” Mr. Tompkins retired from Liberty Life Insurance Co. He was a member of Daybreak community church.
Surviving—in addition to his wife— are his three daughters, Cynthia Kinghorn (husband Tommy), Lynn Whittle, and Susan Tompkins all of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Ryan Whittle, Christopher Whittle, Charles Reid, and Brandon Reid.
In addition to his parents, Mr, Tompkins was preceded in death by his son in-law Allan Whittle.
A service to celebrate Mr. Tompkins life will be held at Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins’ home at 11 Vista Drive, Greenville, SC, 29617 on Sunday May 21st, 2018 at 2:00pm. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.
