Dr. William Walter “Bill” Pennscott

Dr. William Walter “Bill” Pennscott, 88, passed away July 27, 2018, in the comfort of his home in Clemson, South Carolina.
Born October 20, 1929 in Hartford, Michigan and growing up in Chicago, Illinois, he graduated from Fenger High School in 1946 where he lettered in swimming. He made his connection to South Carolina after completing his PhD. in Counseling and Guidance at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Bill joined the faculty at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina with dedication to the University and students in the Department of Education from 1969 until his retirement in 1995.
An academic by nature, Bill dedicated 45 years of proud service in the field of education beginning as a 4th grade teacher and principal in 1950 at the Woodlawn School in Chicago. He continued his career at Morton West High School in Berwyn, Illinois teaching history. He earned his B.S. in Social Sciences and English at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois and then began teaching there in the mid-1960’s. He achieved his M. A. in Social Studies at the University of Illinois at Champagne Urbana. Bill earned his Ed. S. and Ed. D. in Counseling and Guidance at Indiana University in 1965 through 1967.
He completed his career at Clemson University as Professor Emeritus of Education. He is remembered for his critical thinking and lifelong dedication to education. He was a voracious reader, an avid runner, and a dedicated White Sox fan who loved playing his APBA baseball game to the very end. Bill lived each day with purpose, positivity, and kindness. He often ran into former students who thanked him for his positive direction, guidance, and inspiration.
Bill leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Mary Fuhrman Pennscott, his son Charles Pennscott (Ellen Rosof), daughters Mary Gale Comer (Mike), Lee Ahern (Michael), and Susan Richards (Tom), six grandchildren: Will Pennscott, Laura Lindsey, Jenny Pense, Melissa Driver, Brad Richards, and Jaclyn Richards; and six great grandchildren: Briahna, Zion, Eden, and Joy Pense, Jack Richards, and Wren Lindsey. Bill was predeceased by his parents: Irma and William Walter Preikshat of Chicago, IL, and Jade Lynne Pense, his great granddaughter.
At Bill’s request, no immediate service will be held. A private celebration of his life will be held in the fall, for family and friends. Memorials may be made to the Central-Clemson Friends of the Library in memory of Bill. 105 Commons Way, Central, SC 29630.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to his friend and caregiver, Fran Maney, Chad Donaldson, and her two sons, Dylan and Hunter.
