William Lawson Black

May 19, 1936 — April 4, 2025

Spartanburg, SC

William Lawson Black, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on May 18, 1936, to Troy and Lily Suttles Black, William was one of eleven children—seven brothers and three sisters—and was the last surviving among them. He was a man of strength, character, and determination, whose life was rooted in hard work and a deep love for his family.

William was predeceased by two beloved daughters, Tracy “Ace” Black and Kathy Black Hedgepath. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Smith Black; loving daughter, Cindy Black Seay (Timothy Seay); two grandsons, Joshua Reynolds and Jacob Jalbert; and two great-granddaughters, Adalyn and Kaelyn, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.

He spent many years working as a roofer, known for his dedication and craftsmanship. After leaving roofing behind, William found joy in selling hanging baskets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and all manner of goods at local flea markets. There was truly nothing he couldn’t sell—he had a natural talent for connecting with people and a charm that could brighten anyone’s day.

William’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, grit, and a life well lived.
