Walter Allen Gicking, 85, of Travelers Rest, widower of the late Dorothy Gicking, passed into Heaven from Greer Memorial Hospital on Monday, May 17, 2021. Walter was born to Walter and Madelyn Gicking on July 19, 1935, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Walter had lived in Warren, New Jersey before moving to Travelers Rest, South Carolina 30 years ago.
Walter served in the United States Army and was a proud veteran.
Walter, or “Wally” as he liked to be called and as stamped on his arm tattoo in army green, enjoyed working as a machinist. He enjoyed camping adventures, tinkering around his home, and loved spending time on his favorite tractor caring for his property. Wally was an avid animal lover and cared deeply for his precious dog and cat. Wally was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Greenville and enjoyed Father Newman’s inspiring homilies. Wally also thoroughly enjoyed his regular outings at ‘The Little Coffee Pot’ in Travelers Rest. Wally had forged many friendships over coffee and pancakes.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Walter Jacob Gicking and Madelyn Elizabeth Singer; his stepfather, David Singer; his stepmother, Martha Gicking; and his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Gicking.
Walter is survived by his daughters: Donna Harned (Pat Dula) of Seneca and Lisa Gicking of Greer; his precious grandchildren: Nicholas Gicking and Kristen Harned; and his brother: Richard Gicking of Yuma, Arizona.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Greer Memorial Hospital for their excellent care of Walter in his final weeks.
The family will have a small, private service.
