Walter Diehl DeRyke, of Greenville SC, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 30, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Donna DeRyke; and his brother, Gary DeRyke. Walter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bethany DeRyke; his siblings, Alice Markle (Bill), and Phyllis Ball; his children, Ken DeRyke and Kathy DeRyke; his grandchildren, Kelaina DeRyke and Jason Burkett; and six great-grandchildren.
Walter was born and raised in Michigan, where he spent the majority of his life and working career. He was proud of his work with the Eagle Scouts, which inspired him to live a life of community service and helping his fellow man. Walter received a BA in Education from Western Michigan University, and went on the complete his Masters in Special Education and School Administration from Grand Valley University.
Walter began his career in sales, but soon transitioned to teaching elementary school – eventually becoming a special education teacher at the middle and high school level. He loved his job and he was always an advocate for his students. After years of hard work and dedication, he became the president of the Learning Disabilities Association of Michigan. In addition to his service in the education field, he also gave back to his community by coaching youth soccer, leading a Boy Scout Troup, and participating in the Big Brother program as a mentor. Walter loved the outdoors and adventure, he successfully completed the Philmont Challenge, and was also skilled at whitewater rafting.
Walter made many friends and touched many lives throughout his lifetime of service. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
