Wallace Lee "Wally" Cockrell, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, in Marietta, South Carolina at the age of 71. Although he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 15, 1952, Wally always identified with Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
A proud Air Force veteran, Wally served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War. His commitment to service was a testament to his character and his dedication to the principles of duty and sacrifice. Following his military career, Wally channeled his skills and passions into a fulfilling career in building and construction. He was a true craftsman, and his sharp mind and strong hands were skilled in nearly every endeavor, but he always found particular satisfaction in welding, fabrication, and engine building.
Wally was also a man of faith, devoting much of his time to Biblical study. His wisdom, gleaned both from the pages of scripture and the hard lessons of life, was a beacon for all who knew him. He was the embodiment of loving guidance and an adventurous spirit, always ready to embark on a new journey or to lend an ear to those in need.
His legacy lives on through his devoted sons, James Clarding Cockrell and William Charles "Chuck" Cockrell; his daughters, Melva Lynn Tebutt and Tiffany Nicole Edwards; and his three grandchildren. Each of them reflects a different facet of Wally's character, from his loving nature to his wise counsel, and they will continue to honor his memory through their own lives.
Wally Cockrell left an indelible mark on this world, and although he will be deeply missed, his memory and legacy will endure through the generations to come.
