Our Home

There is an old house
built low on the ground
When the wind blows it makes a
mighty lonesome sound

The paint is peeling
and the tin roof leaks
Some windows are out
and the rough floor squeaks

Curtains at the windows
are ragged and torn
and the spreads on the beds
are faded and worn

A lot of ole used cars
parked around the back door
and the yard is not grassy and green
like it was before

The house is falling down
and even the ole barn
These young people
just don’t care about the farm

Fences wont hold
they’re nearly all down
weeds and trash covers the ground

When I think of the times
we were happy and gay
it breaks our hearts
to see it today

The ole home place looks
to us so sad and alone
There used to be love and laughter
We were so young
that was our home

Lonesome wind---whispering wind
dry my eyes---let me see
Lonesome wind---whispering wind
Let the sweet memories
blow back to me

Our yesterdays we leave
within your keeping
And bid the ole home farewell
With eyes so sad for weeping

Last Time I ever saw the ole homeplace
and I’ll never go back again.

Remember me when flowers bloom
Early in the spring
Remember me on sunny days
In the fun that summer brings

Remember me in the fall
As you walk through the leaves of gold
And in the wintertime - remember me
In the stories that are told

But most of all remember
Each day - right from the start
I will be forever near
For I live within your heart
