Truman Conley, a man known for his wit, intelligence, and generosity, passed away on July 16, 2024, in Landrum, South Carolina. Born on September 25, 1952 in Harlan, Kentucky, Truman was the son to the late Geraldine and Clarence Dingus.
Truman was a brother among siblings who predeceased him: Betty Dingus, Getrude Darnell, and Delores Dingus. His surviving siblings include John Dingus, Christine Conley, and Walter Dingus.
His professional life was dedicated to serving the community as a Water Treatment Plant Operator for the city of Clinton, South Carolina. Prior to moving to South Carolina, Truman was the Asset Management Program Field Representative for the National Rural Water Association in Oklahoma for ten years, where he spent time traveling the western states. In Tallahassee, Florida, Truman was the USDA Rural Development Circuit Rider where he enjoyed mapping and operating ground penetrating radar.
Truman’s passions were as diverse as they were engaging. He was an avid horticulturist, finding solace and joy in the cultivation of plants. His home was often filled with the sounds of birds, which he raised with the same patience and attention he gave to his flower garden. Surf fishing was another of Truman’s favorite pastimes, providing him with moments of tranquility and reflection.
A lifelong learner, Truman embraced the disciplines of yoga, weight lifting, running, ballroom dancing, and martial arts, which he believed brought balance and discipline to his life. His love for travel took him to many places, enriching his life with experiences and stories that he enjoyed sharing. Reading was more than a hobby for Truman; it was a way to explore the world from the comfort of his home.
Truman’s daughter, Cheryl Hunter, and his son-in-law, Lonnie Hunter, will remember him as a man who lived his life to the fullest, with a spirit that was as generous as it was joyful. His humor and wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
