Thurmond Duke, Jr.

May 1, 1951 — February 1, 2025

Greenville, SC

Thurmond Duke Jr., passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, in Greenville, SC, at the age of 73. Born on May 1, 1951, in Flowery Branch, GA, Thurmond's life was a testament to his unwavering faith and his ability to bring laughter into the lives of those around him.

A proud graduate of Emory University and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Thurmond dedicated his life to serving others. His commitment to his faith was evident in his work as a chaplain in the US Army, where he provided spiritual guidance and support to soldiers in times of need. Following his military service, he continued his calling as a pastor in Baton Rouge, LA, touching countless lives with his sermons and dedication to his community.

Thurmond's passion for missions led him to serve in various capacities throughout his life, always striving to spread kindness wherever he went. His work was not just a career; it was a calling that he wholly embraced.

An avid outdoorsman, Thurmond found solace and joy in nature. He could often be found fishing in the quiet of dawn or hiking through the mountains that he so loved. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his love for reading and bible study, pursuits that nourished his soul.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Grace Painter and her husband Dustan Lee Painter, and his son, Benjamin Scott Duke and his wife Kayla Travis. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Ruby Susana Painter, William Scott Duke, Ezra Mutty, and Judah Ripple Duke.

Thurmond was a man of many words, but three in particular best encapsulate his essence: funny, faith-filled, and interesting. He had a story or insight for every occasion, and his sense of humor was a gift that he shared generously. His faith was the bedrock upon which he built his life, guiding him through trials and triumphs alike.

As we bid farewell to Thurmond Duke Jr., we celebrate a life marked by service, love, and an unshakeable faith. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. A private family service is being planned to celebrate his life and honor his memory.
