Thomas Michael Dunaway, Sr., known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024, in his hometown of Clinton, SC. Born on November 9, 1956, in the same close-knit community, Mike's life was a testament to his courage, creativity, and handyman skills that touched the lives of many around him.
Mike was a proud veteran, having served his country with distinction in both the US Marine Corps and the SC Army National Guard. His dedication to service was a cornerstone of his character, and his honorable discharge from military duty was a source of great pride for him and his family. After his military service, Mike continued to apply his disciplined work ethic and attention to detail in his civilian life, which was evident in his professional achievements and personal pursuits.
An alumnus of Piedmont Technical College, Mike's education laid the groundwork for a lifetime of learning and skill-building. His natural aptitude for understanding how things worked translated into a fulfilling career and a hobby that he loved. Woodworking and small engine repair were not just pastimes for Mike; they were passions that allowed him to create, fix, and improve everything he touched.
Mike's legacy is carried on by his loving family, who were the center of his world. He was predeceased by his mother, Reba Joyce Patterson, and his father, Robert Jefferson Dunaway, Jr., brother, James Robert Dunaway, and a special family member Ruby Barnett Dunaway. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his daughter, Tina Dunaway Alexander (Tim) of Laurens; his son, Thomas Michael Dunaway Jr. (Sierra) of Virginia Beach, VA; and his adoring grandchildren, Taylor Alexander Crowder, Lydia Thoiss Dunaway, Levi Jefferson Dunaway, Easton Boyce Alexander, Hudson Thomas Dunaway, Everett James Crowder, and Hazel Evangeline Dunaway.
Mike's life was a reflection of the words that best described him: courageous, creative, and handy. He approached each day with a can-do spirit and a heart full of generosity. Whether he was crafting a piece of furniture, tinkering in his workshop, or sharing his knowledge with his grandchildren, Mike did so with a level of care and precision that was truly remarkable.
As we say goodbye to Thomas Michael Dunaway, Sr, we celebrate his life and accomplishments. His courage will continue to inspire us, his creativity will remind us to look at the world with wonder, and his handiwork will stand as a lasting tribute to his talent and dedication. Mike's memory will be forever etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his spirit will live on in the stories they share and the lives he touched.
