Thelma Elizabeth Stanley passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023, at the SRHS Hospice House in Spartanburg at the age of 80. Born on February 28, 1943, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, she was the cherished daughter of Edith and Hubert Stanley. Thelma was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew her, and she will be remembered for her adventurous spirit and her unwavering love for her family.
Her life was a testament to the strength and resilience she carried within her 4'11" stature. Thelma worked at Phillips Fibers and later became a valued employee at Atchison Transportation, where she was known for her feisty yet warm-hearted nature.
She is survived by her daughter Theresa Stacey and son Kenneth Horton (Dana). Brothers David and Albert Stanley, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Thelma’s role as a grandma was one she embraced with joy and pride, passing on her zest for life to her grandchildren, Tracie Teague Mason (Greg), Mandy Teague Austin (Jason), Josh Stacey (Kelly), Haley Watford (Adam), Marisa Horton (Ryan), Garrison, Dalton, and Kayden Horton. Great-grandchildren, Chelsie Mason (Jon), Gregory, and Trace Fuller, Kaegan Stacey, Makalla Scott (Westyn), Teagan and Oakley Austin, Jax, Raiden, Anikin, and Kirby Saxon, Greyson and Jackson, and eagerly awaiting baby Watford due 2024. Great-great-grandchildren Maebre and Hampton Robbs.
Thelma was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Robert and Howard Stanley, Dan, and a sister Shirley.
Thelma's interests reflected her adventurous and spirited nature. She relished her family reunion, mountain trips to Cherokee and the excitement of visits to Harrah's. Her love for coffee was only matched by her passion for music, with favorites like "Legs" by ZZ Top, "Oh Happy Day," and "Go Rest High on That Mountain" often playing in the background of family gatherings.
Those who knew Thelma would describe her as a woman who lived her life with passion and love. Her infectious laughter made every moment with her memorable. She was the embodiment of strength, often facing life's challenges with a smile and that inspired those around her. She was truly forgiving and loved unconditionally. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her loved ones and her stories retold with affection by the generations she touched.
A private celebration of life was held November 25, 2023. No formal memorial services are planned in accordance with her wishes
