Susan Joyce Fowler Grimes of Piedmont, SC, went home to be with her Lord on May 27th, 2023. She was surrounded by loving family members when she shed her earthly body for her heavenly one.
Surviving are her husband (Ernest Wendell Grimes), her son & his wife (Robbie and Kristie Grimes), her daughter & her husband (Wendy and David Hilliard), her sister (Cheryle Spicer), brother (Tommy Ray Fowler) and sister-in-law (Sherriell Fowler). She has four grandchildren, Coleman Randell Grimes (Powdersville, SC), Abigail Lynn Grimes (Powdersville, SC), Sarah Suzanne Hilliard (Milwaukee, WI), and Lucas Mathilde Hilliard (South Jordan, UT). She was loved by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father (Thomas Raymond), her mother (Lucia Roberta Richey), and her brother (Michael Eugene Fowler).
Susan was born on July 25th, 1949, in Greenville, SC. She graduated from Wren High School in 1967 and married the love of her life, Wendell (“Ding-a-Ling”), on December 31st, 1969.
She loved camping and spent many summers between school years relaxing at Oconee Point and Twin Lakes campgrounds with her family and extended family. In earlier years, she spent time at Fowler family properties at Lake Greenwood. Susan traveled to see her kids and grandkids, wherever they were across the nation and around the world. She was proud of them all for loving and supporting each of their families as she had modeled for them. In her later years, she loved to watch the Game Show Network and would have made a formidable contestant.
She worked in the food service industry for most of her adult life as a cafeteria worker and manager for Concrete Elementary School, Wren Primary School, and other local schools and businesses.
A member of the Loyal Order of the Moose since 1980, Susan helped her community through various service projects and fundraisers for the less fortunate. She held all offices of the Women of the Moose between the Easley and South Greenville lodges. She routinely traveled to LOOM State and National Conventions with Wendell and her children. She held the degrees of Academy of Friendship, College of Regents, and Star Recorder.
She will be forever remembered by her loved ones as a beautiful, passionate, loving, caring, and kind soul that would help anyone in need. She will be missed greatly and never forgotten.
We’ll Love You Forever and Always.
The family wants to express our gratitude for all of the family members who were able to be at the hospital in person and over the phone in Mama’s last couple of days and final moments. What a blessing and comfort it was for Mama to be able to tell everyone that she loved them before she left for home. She was always happy knowing the great bond of family was a constant in her life and that it would endure long after. We love all y’all.
The family wishes to thank her God-provided caregivers at Saint Francis Downtown for the excellent care given to Mama. There are several names that we remember, but we would not want to leave any of them out. So, this thanks goes out to all of them: doctors and nurses, as well as the nutritional services staff, respiratory and speech therapists, janitorial staff, and every person who helped Mama win the battle over her illness with mercy. Their compassionate treatment for our mom -and, really, all of us- was a testament to the Bon Secours mission which is: “To extend the compassionate ministry of Jesus by improving the health and well-being of our communities and bring good help to those in need, especially people who are poor, dying and underserved.”
