It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Captain Stephen Vernon Merchant, better known as Captain Merch. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
Capt. Merch, 76, of Easley, SC husband of Diane Brady Merchant, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024. Capt. Merch was born in Henderson County, NC. The son of the late Claude and Fay Merchant. He is survived by his son, Adam Frederick Merchant (Emelia), and granddaughter Violet.
Capt. Merch began his career as a nuclear chemist for Florida Power and Light at the Turkey Point Plant in Homestead, FL. While living in the Florida Keys his love for the sea took him to the Florida Coast Guard, where he became a Captain. After retiring from Turkey Point Nuclear Station, he began spending more time with his wife, Diane, and his family and friends on his fishing boat, "The Green Machine".
Capt. Merch enjoyed working in their garden, fishing, and golfing. Watching his beloved Clemson Tigers and riding his John Deere tractor were two of his favorite pastimes.
Steve's wife, Diane will notify family and friends of the future date of Capt. Merch's Celebration of Life.
