Sonja Kay Baum, affectionately known as Kay, passed away on November 14, 2024, in Mauldin, South Carolina. Born on August 3, 1940, in Fork Mountain, Tennessee, Kay was a beacon of love and faith throughout her life. Her warm presence and selfless nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Kay's life was one of devotion—to her family, her work, and her faith. She retired from a career at Hollingsworth, where she was not only a dedicated employee but also a cherished colleague. Her work ethic and kindness made her a respected figure within her professional community. However, it was her role as a mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of God that truly defined her.
A proud mother to her daughters, Christina Jenkins and Tonya Harris, Kay's love and guidance were the cornerstones of their lives. Her grandchildren, Kayla Leeth, Aly Wright, and Tristan Harris, knew her as the best nana, whose love knew no bounds. She was also a cherished mother-in-law to Rick and grandmother-in-law to Dakota. Though her mother, Mary Coppinger, predeceased her, Kay continued to honor her memory through the values she instilled in her own family.
Kay's faith was the compass by which she navigated life. A faithful member of Upstate Mauldin, formerly known as New Hope Baptist Church, she lived her beliefs with every action and word. Her life was a testament to the hymn "When we all get to Heaven," as she embodied the joy and anticipation of eternal life. Her family finds comfort in knowing that Kay has been welcomed with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant," as she entered her heavenly home.
Those who knew Kay would describe her as loving, faith-filled, and selfless. She had an innate ability to make everyone around her feel valued and loved. Her selflessness was not just a trait but a way of life, as she consistently put the needs of others before her own. Her legacy is one of love and service, and it will continue to inspire those she has left behind.
As we mourn the loss of Sonja Kay Baum, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived. Her spirit, characterized by boundless love and unwavering faith, will forever be cherished and remembered. Kay's journey on earth may have ended, but her story will continue to be told through the lives of those she touched.
Kay's life will be honored in a service at Upstate Mauldin (509 S. Main St, Mauldin) on November 30, 2024, at 3 pm. Her family will gather to share memories, to laugh, to cry, and to rejoice in the knowledge that Kay is at peace, her faith having led her to the eternal joy she so firmly believed in. The family will receive friends following the service.
We bid farewell to a remarkable woman, whose life was a gift to us all. Sonja Kay Baum will be deeply missed, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of her family, her friends, and all who were blessed to know her.
