Born on September 10, 1931, in Greenville, SC, Sarah's life was a testament to the power of selflessness and devotion. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Sarah's journey began as a bright-eyed student at Parker High School in Greenville, where she cultivated a love for learning and community. Her academic pursuits continued at Anderson College, laying a foundation for a life rich in knowledge and wisdom. Sarah's professional life was marked by her role as a dedicated secretary, where her meticulous attention to detail and warm demeanor made her a beloved figure.
At the heart of Sarah's world was her family. She was the loving wife of Joseph Morris "Fig" Newton for an incredible 72 years, a partnership that was the envy of all who witnessed their enduring affection. Together, they raised a family that included their son, Phil (Janet) Lanford, and daughters, Susan (Mark) Shea and Rindy (Tracy) Sorrells. Sarah's legacy continued to blossom with her grandchildren, Charlie Lanford, Greg Staffins, Julie Schwartz, Nicole Allen, Allyson Shea, Morgan Rice, Staci Hankins, and Mitchell Shea, as well as her numerous great-grandchildren. Each of them was touched by Sarah's boundless love and unwavering support.
A longtime member of Monaghan Baptist Church, Sarah's faith was a cornerstone of her existence. Her involvement in the church community was a reflection of her commitment to service and her belief in the power of fellowship. Sarah's spirit of generosity extended beyond the walls of the church, touching the lives of many through her selfless actions and compassionate heart.
Sarah and her husband Fig shared a passion for travel, with their annual trip to Daytona Beach being a highlight that brought together family and friends in a celebration of togetherness and joy. These cherished moments created memories that will be treasured forever by those who were fortunate enough to be part of them.
Words like loving, kind, and selfless only begin to describe Sarah. Her presence was a comfort, her smile a source of joy, and her guidance a steady hand in the lives of those she touched.
