Sarah Ann (Sally) Powers Firth, age 71, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 22, 2024 after a courageous multi-year battle with pulmonary disease. Sally was the beloved wife of Christopher and proud mother of Alan, Joan, and Erin. A private Celebration-of-Life event is planned to be held later this year at a family gathering in North Carolina.
As the fifth of eight children, Sally was born in June, 1953 and grew up in South Orange, NJ. Sally graduated from Columbia HS in Maplewood, NJ and attended Miami-Dade College in Miami, FL. After college, Sally worked as a computer programmer for Eastern Airlines. Still, she took the greatest pride in fulfilling her roles as wife, mother, and homemaker for her family. Sally was an avid reader and student of geography. She loved to map out family vacation travels in great detail and share her love of geography with her children. Every mealtime was an opportunity for her to instill knowledge and inspire curiosity in her children. Sally particularly enjoyed family reunions as this was a time to embrace those she loved dearly and to welcome new members with every new marriage and every new birth. Her capacity to love seemed endless.
After residing for many years in Miami, FL where she and Chris raised their family, the couple relocated to Taylors, SC in 2012 following Chris’s retirement from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Sally was pre-deceased by her parents, Alan Buchanan Powers and Joan Kelly Powers, and her brothers Alan Buchanan Powers, Jr. and Paul Mercready Powers. She is survived by her husband Christopher, son Alan (Missi) of Charleston, SC, child Joan Firth and daughter Erin Firth of Taylors, SC, grandchildren Sawyer and Bennett Firth, and granddogs Cooper and Norman. Sally is also survived by sister-in-law Lynn Wager Powers of Lewisville, NC and siblings Marc (Stella) of Miami, FL, Peter (Anne) of Statesville, NC, Ann Clare Powers Wiener of Pfafftown, NC, John (Angela) of Brentwood, TN, and Daniel (Alice) of Norwalk, CT. Sally’s beloved and large extended family of cousins, nephews, and nieces will also miss her dearly.
The family is especially grateful for the professional care provided to Sally during the final months of her life by the kind and attentive providers and staff of the Prisma Health Greer Memorial hospital and Prisma Health Long Term Acute Care.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
