Sandra Brigham Smith

d. December 6, 2015

Sandra Brigham Smith, 81, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina on Sunday afternoon, December 6, 2015.

The daughter of Alden and Dorothy Richey Brigham, Sandra was born May 29, 1934 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and grew up in Ben Avon, Pennsylvania.

After graduating from Catawba College in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Social Studies, she raised her family in many locations across the South and then spent many wonderful years residing in a home she designed and built on the shores of Lake Wylie, SC, where she lived until the time of her death.

Her home on the lake was built with a peaceful and respectful tribute to all aspects of nature, including thoughtfully crafted flower and rock gardens, and havens for birds and ducks.  A lover of life, nature, animals and her family, Sandra was an avid horseback rider, gardener and reader, and an adventurous traveler.  She was a very special and true friend to many and had the ability to touch people’s hearts.  Sandra adored spending time and traveling with her sisters, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends, and would also warmly welcome them to her lake home for extended visits.  Sandra’s involvement with River Hills Community Church in Lake Wylie, SC was a vital part of her life, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir and made many artistic contributions for church displays.  Undoubtedly, Sandra was best known for her loving, spirited and energetic approach to life and loved ones.

Sandra is survived by her sister, Carlotta Brigham Rogers from Plains City, Ohio; daughter Lynn Smith Ihrig of Greenville, SC; grandchildren Jamie Smith Baker and her husband, Jeff T. Baker of Franklin, NC; Ashley Isabelle Schaefer of Myrtle Beach, SC; William Bruce Schaefer IV of Myrtle Beach, SC; Jordan Richard Ihrig of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Alden Banks Ihrig of Greenville, SC.  Sandra is also survived by her former husband and friend, Richard Hill Smith Jr., and many loving nieces and nephews.

Sandra was preceded in death by her sister Patricia B. Valiasek of Pittsfield, MA and daughter Cristy Leigh Smith of Charlotte, NC.

A memorial service for Sandra B. Smith will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at River Hills Community Church in Lake Wylie, SC.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to River Hills Community Church, 104 Hamilton’s Ferry Road, Lake Wylie, SC, 29710.
