Sam J. Engel was born May 18th, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of
Harry and Ethel Engel. Sam passed away peacefully at home, Friday the
18th of August 2023. Sam grew up in Dallas, Texas, and joined the Air
Force in 1951. Sam met his wife of 72 years, Vera Quinn, while
stationed at Donaldson AFB in Greenville, South Carolina. He worked in
a textile mill in Greenville while attending Bob Jones University, where
he received a BS degree in 1958. After college, he began a career in
pharmaceutical sales that would span the next 35 years. Sam and Vera
enjoyed camping with their family and traveled across many states
from the northeast to the west in various RVs, exploring and enriching
the lives of their children and grandchildren. After retiring from
pharmaceutical sales, he continued to work part-time in various
positions in the Greenville community. He loved meeting and sharing
his good humor with people, staying active, and continuing to work well
into his late 80's. He loved his family and pets, a good joke, and an
afternoon nap with his pooch. He will be missed by all those who knew
and loved his gentle smile and endearing sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Harry Engel. He
is survived by his wife Vera Quinn Engel, and two sons John Engel (wife
Rita), and Ron Engel (wife Helen). He had three grandchildren, Samuel
Engel (wife Whitney), Daniel Engel (wife Sarah Grace), and Alexandria
Rose (husband Daniel), as well as five great-grandchildren, Arianna
Howell, Mae Engel, Quinn Engel, Anthony; Engel, and Charles
Engel. Special acknowledgement to his extended family Tami and
Jimmy Tinsley who loved and nurtured Sam and Vera with amazing
Christian care and affection were present at his passing. He and
Vera had been attending the 1st Assembly of God in Easley. A memorial
service to celebrate his life will be held at 1st Assembly of God,810
Saco Lowell Rd. Easley, SC on Saturday, August 26th, 2023, at 4:00 pm.
