Preceding him in death were his beloved family members: his parents , Zannie Creel Ethridge and Myrtle Eugenia Langston Ethridge, his sisters, Betty Fletcher, Lou Ellen Wilson, Shirley Taylor, Anna Malone, and infant sister Ella Ethridge; and his brothers, Tommy Ethridge, Johnny Ethridge, and Harry Ethridge.
