Robert D. Olthoff, 94, 316 Downs Blvd., Clemson, SC , husband of Marjorie
Olthoff, passed away at the Cottingham Hospice House Seneca, SC on August
23, 2016. Born in Holland, MI Bob attended Albion College, and Western Reserve
University prior to entering the US Marine Corps, First Division, in 1942
in WWII. He served in the Pacific Area and at the end of the war was
assigned to the China Marines in the Intelligence Area in China.
Bob and his family have resided in Wethersfield, CT, Simsbury, CT, West
Acton, MA, and Longmeadow MA where he was active in the Dealers' Automobile
Insurance industry before retiring to Keowee Key, Salem SC. and Clemson, SC
Bob's favorite pastime was playing Cribbage and he was never happier than
when he could teach the game to others and/or play the game at any time of
night or day. While at Keowee Key, he organized a Cribbage group "The
Peggers" and also enjoyed "playing at golf," to quote him.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marjorie, daughter Christine
Olthoff Conner of Ipswich, MA., Mark Olthoff of Naples, FL and John
Olthoff of West Yarmouth, MA. Also three cousins whom he adored: Mary
Workman of Grand Rapids, MI, Carol Riekse of Chicago, IL, and Barbara
Reiswig, of Lopez Island, Washington.
He was preceded in death by biological parents Richard and Christine
(Zagers) Arens and adoptive parents Jacob and Alice (Zagers) Olthoff, of
Holland MI.
A Reception to celebrate Bob's life will be held on Saturday, September 3,
2016 from 4-6 p.m. at the CARC Large Dining Room at Clemson Downs,
Donations may be made to Cottingham Hospice House, 390 Keowee School Road,
Seneca, SC 29672, or Providence Hospice, 202 Wall Street,
Piedmont, SC 29673.
Interment will be in Holland , MI at the convenience of the family.
Cremation Society of South Carolina is assisting the family.
