Long time local radio DJ Robert David Mackney, aka The Maddog, Robert David, RD Mackney, RD, Bob, The Gladdog, and miscellaneous other adjectives, depending on how well you knew him, is now playing his favorite tunes for The Lord.
Bob was from Long Island, NY, graduated from Clemson in the 70's, discovered just how pleasant SC was and become one of those northern folk who just wouldn't go home.
Bob got his start in radio at WSBF, the Clemson University radio station, back when rock'n'roll was still interesting and tried to mean something. After graduation he got a job with WQOK from midnight to 6 AM, talked station management into allowing him to break format (something Bob was good at no matter the situation), and authored the "freewheeling' Messin' with the Maddog" show. From there followed stints at other stations and formats in the Greenville area, including Rock 101, WORD, WSSL, and HIS Radio. Bob was always searching for something and finally found it when he accepted Jesus Christ, leading to the change in moniker from 'Maddog' to 'Gladdog'. He maintained his love of God, music, irreverent humour, and optimism to the end. At his best Bob was easily one of the fastest, funniest, and most entertaining humans God saw fit to put on this planet. Right now I expect God is laughing and telling him, "Son, welcome home."
We who are left behind already miss you.
Bob is survived by his wife of 20 years, Martha. Also surviving are his sister, Mary Jo; and brother, David. Special thanks to Ken and DeeDee and Allison who surrounded us with prayers, concern, timely visits and 20 years of Friendship and Family; Carl and Bobbie for a lifetime of friendship; Danny B. for 30 years of being a good neighbor and reliable friend; Teresa, a long time wonderful friend who loved and supported Bob, we will never forget your milkshake visits and sweet smiles of encouragement; Tanya, Daisy, Pastor Roy, Jessica, Jasmine and Gary A. for their loving support; and Amedysis Hospice for the compassionate care given Bob as he journeyed to Heaven...truly treating us like family.
