Robert Lionel (Bob) Burke Jr., 87, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital, in Greenville, SC, on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born May 12, 1930, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the son of Robert L. Burke Sr. and Ola Gertrude Campbell.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sue McCain.
Bob is survived by his wife, Angela of Greenville; son, Jim Burke and his wife Linda of Gastonia, NC; daughter, Regina Burke and her husband Bob Schade of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Sarah McMillan and her husband Charlie of Sumter, SC; stepson, Glenn Reese of Sumter, SC; stepdaughter, Jeanne-Marie Kenney of Portland, OR; stepdaughter, Jeanette Ross Bourlet of Abbevillle, SC; granddaughter, Erin Burke of Chelsea, MI; grandsons, Robert and Patrick McMillan of Sumter, SC; brother, Michael of Huntington, WV.
Bob graduated from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. He served in the United States Army as a hospital corpsman in France during the Korean War. Following graduation, Bob began his career as a chemist with Union Carbide Corporation in West Virginia. In 1959, he and his family relocated to Aiken, SC, where he continued his chemical career with Valchem/United Merchants in Langley, SC. Over subsequent years, he held a variety of technical positions with several southeastern chemical and textile-related companies, including Santee Printworks in Sumter, SC, Pat-Chem/Yorkshire Pat-Chem in Greenville, SC and Apexical in Spartanburg, SC.
He was an avid photographer, and an amateur mycologist, who enjoyed hunting for, photographing and identifying mushrooms of all kinds. Until his health declined, he enjoyed running, bicycling and working out at the Furman University gym. He loved books and music, especially classical, jazz and classic rock. He was a devoted student of breadmaking and the history, brewing and drinking of beer - a true Renaissance man.
At his request, services will be private. The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Francis Hospital for their excellent care and support of Bob and his family.
