November 9, 1938 — May 23, 2018

Robert Gardner Dunnavant, 79, of Greenville, SC died May 23 at Greer Memorial Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Florence Dunnavant of Charleston, WV and his brother, Paul M. Dunnavant, Jr. of Orangeburg, SC. He is survived by his wife Susan where they were approaching their 25th wedding anniversary milestone in June. He is also survived by his nephew, Paul Dunnavant III of Columbia, SC and his step-daughters, Jessica Golden of Darien, CT, Justine Dunnavant of Greenville, SC and Emily Dean Dewar of Greenville, SC.
Bob was a lifetime financial planner and consultant and was proud to partner with his step-children in sharing his career passion. Many of Bob’s clients were third generation, and he enjoyed more than 40 years in financial planning, always pursuing the best interest of those he served. He considered his vocation as a sacred mission, and worked tirelessly to develop optimal strategies for the financial well-being of his clients and their heirs.
Bob was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and West Virginia State College in Charleston, West Virginia. He attended the American College to complete the designations of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). After a short tour with the US Marines, he joined the West Virginia Army National Guard where he retired with the rank of Colonel. He was distinguished with numerous awards including the Legion of Merit. Bob was known by family and friends as a true patriot with the highest respect for the military and those in service to the United States. He claimed the most difficult assignment of his life was as the West Virginia State Mobilization Officer during Desert Storm as the West Virginia troops were called into service.
Known affectionately as "COL BOB-O" to family and close friends, he was a high-energy man whose unmistakable laugh and immense presence filled a room. He loved to entertain and host friends and would strike up conversation with anyone. Bob was at home in the mountains, at the beach, and on the lake, especially with the family dogs Willi and Harley in tow. The Cremation Society of SC handled arrangements. A private memorial service is scheduled for November 9 at the Pelham Road Baptist Church Family Life Center, Reverend Sam Coates officiating.
