Robert Sherrill "Doc" Norville, a cherished educator, coach, and beloved family man, passed away on October 20, 2024, in Simpsonville, SC. Born on February 19, 1942, in Spindale, NC, Doc's life was a testament to the power of kindness, humor, and love.
Doc grew up in Spindale, North Carolina, where he developed a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Appalachian mountains. He was the son of the late Virgil Norville and Beulah Kimbrell Norville, and was preceded in death by his brother Alfred Norville and sister Shirley Norville. He is survived by his sisters Martha Elmore and Nancy Harrill, his children Scott Norville and wife Kathy, Kelly Earley, Kim Norville, and Allison Norville. He is survived by his grandchildren Asia McGlinchey, Hannah Hergott-Smith, Madison Hergott, Jack Hergott, Khloe Norville, Lindsay Norville, Laney Norville, Brittany Earley, as well as his adored great-grandchildren Emery McGlinchey, Amber McGlinchey, and Carson McGlinchey, who brought him immense joy in his later years.
Doc's passion for education and sports was evident early on. After graduating from Rutherfordton-Spindale Central High School in 1960, he went on to earn his degree from Appalachian State University in 1964. His career as a teacher, coach, and driver's education instructor was marked by his dedication to his students and athletes. Doc's ability to connect with young people and inspire them to achieve their best was one of his most notable qualities.
Those who knew Doc will remember him as a man who loved to laugh and had a knack for making others smile. His sense of humor was infectious, and his presence could light up any room. He was a loving figure who provided guidance and support to all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
An avid sports enthusiast, Doc's love for football was unparalleled. He spent countless hours on the field, imparting his knowledge and passion for the game to his players. Off the field, he could often be found tinkering with cars, a hobby that allowed him to express his mechanical creativity and resourcefulness.
Doc's interest in home-building showcased his desire to create and his appreciation for craftsmanship. He took great pride in working with his hands and was always eager to embark on a new project. His love for nature was evident in the way he lived his life, often taking the time to enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors.
Kindness was the cornerstone of Doc's character. He approached life with a loving heart, always ready to extend a helping hand or a word of encouragement. His legacy is one of compassion and generosity, traits that have left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his career.
