ROBERT “BOB” BROWN, JR., WAS BORN APRIL 21, 1942 IN PHILIDELPHIA, PA. HE WAS THE SON OF THE LATE JOHN HUDGINS AND THE LATE BISHOP NAOMI STRONG. HE PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY IN HIS HOME ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2018 AFTER A LONG ILLNESS.
HE ENLISTED IN THE US MARINE CORP IN 1965 IN THE VIETNAM WAR AND SERVED AS CORPORAL UNTIL RECEIVING AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE IN 1969. DURING HIS SERVICE IN THE MILITARY, HE WON NUMEROUS MEDALS, INCLUDING NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL AND THE PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION. AFTER THE WAR HE WORKED FOR GENERAL MOTORS IN NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK FOR SEVERAL YEARS PERFECTING HIS CRAFT AS A MASTER MECHANIC.
IN LATER YEARS, HE MOVED TO GREENVILLE, SC AND STARTED HIS OWN BUSINESS KNOWN AS “GREENVILLE CARBURETOR EXCHANGE”. HE WAS SO GOOD AT HIS WORK THAT HE BECAME KNOWN AS “THE BEST CARBURETOR MAN IN TOWN” AND PEOPLE CAME FROM MILES JUST TO HAVE HIM WORK ON THEIR CARS. IN HIS SPARE TIME, HE VOLUNTEERED AS A DRIVER FOR MEALS ON WHEELS AND LOVED TO DRIVE RACE CARS AT THE GREENVILLE SPEEDWAY RACING EVENTS.
HE WAS SMALL IN STATURE AND WOULD OFTEN SAY “I’M JUST A LITTLE GUY” BUT HE HAD A BIG HEART AND LOTS OF LOVE TO SHARE, ESPECIALLY FOR HIS “BABIES”. HE LOVED HIS DOGS AND OVER THE YEARS HAD QUITE A FEW FROM THE GERMAN SHEPHERDS, DOBERMAN PINSCHERS, ROTTWEILERS, BULLMASTIFFS (YES THOSE BIG SLOBBERY KINDS), AND HE LOVED THEM ALL!
UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF HIS GRANDPARENTS, BISHOP DAVID STRONG AND MOTHER LOIS STRONG AND HIS MOTHER, BISHOP NAOMI STRONG, HE ACCEPTED JESUS AS HIS SAVIOR AT AN EARLY AGE. IN LATER YEARS HE WAS BAPTIZED AND BECAME A MEMBER OF TABERNACLE BAPTIST CHURCH IN GREENVILLE, SC IN 1989. HIS LOVE FOR THE LORD WAS ALWAYS DEEPLY EMBEDDED IN HIS HEART AND IN 2015 HE REDEDICATED HIS LIFE TO THE LORD AND BECAME A FAITHFUL MEMBER OF ABUNDANT LIFE IN CHRIST CHURCH WHERE HE TAUGHT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND WAS APPOINTED AS A DEACON IN JULY OF 2016.
ROBERT LEAVES TO CHERISH FOND MEMORIES HIS WIFE, VICTORIA C. BROWN AND ALL OF HIS CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN, SISTERS AND BROTHERS. HE WAS BLESSED IN THIS LIFE WITH 13 CHILDREN, 19 GRANDCHILDREN, 19 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN, 2 GREAT-GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, 10 SISTERS, 4 BROTHERS AND A HOST OF NIECES, NEPHEWS, OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS, ALL OF WHOM LOVED HIM DEARLY.
THOSE WE LOVE REMAIN WITH US
FOR LOVE ITSELF LIVES ON,
AND CHERISHED MEMORIES NEVER FADE
BECAUSE A LOVED ONE IS GONE.
THOSE WE LOVE CAN NEVER BE
MORE THAN A THOUGHT APART
FOR AS LONG AS THERE ARE MEMORIES,
THEY WILL LIVE ON IN OUR HEARTS.
