Robert Lee Brown, psychologist, writer, and educator, passed away on May 24, 2016 at the age of 93. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his beloved wife of 72 years, Dorothy, and their three children.
Robert received his early education in Cullman, Alabama, graduated from Sanford University, and did graduate work at the University of Alabama and Purdue. After serving as a faculty member at UA, he and Dorothy moved to Greenville, SC in 1952, accepting a professor’s position in the psychology department at Furman University.
In 1959, Robert entered into private practice specializing in industrial, vocational and clinical psychology. As a psychologist and management consultant his career extended over 50 years. Robert was an early advocate in SC mental health issues, an active Rotarian, and a member of Christ Church for over 40 years.
Throughout his long personal and professional life, Robert would be known for his perseverance, resilience, and innovative optimism.
All who knew Robert recognized his passion as a loving and gracious husband and father, always putting his family’s needs before his own. Robert’s devotion to his wife Dorothy always remained constant, setting an example of what true love really looks and feels like. His moral standards and work ethic set the bar high and were recognized and admired by all who knew him. Robert was a deep thinker and a man of few words, but very precise in the delivery of his thoughts.
Robert delighted in his children’s and grandchildren’s achievements but mostly in their love for family.
Surviving are his three children: Jennifer Lowe, Suzanne Devlin (Phil), and Christopher Brown (Gina); his five grandchildren: Dalton, Leslie, Maggie, Kate and Clare; and his loving wife, Dorothy.
A memorial service will be held at the Christ Church Episcopal Chapel at 2 PM on Sunday, May 29. The family will greet friends in the McCall Parlor after the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Ministries, 606 Pendleton St., Greenville, SC 29601.
