Robert Whittle Arnold (Bob), age 95, of Greenville, SC, formerly of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, went to be with his Savior on December 7, 2017.
Robert Arnold was born on August 31, 1922, in Lunenburg, Massachusetts to the late Raymond Arnold and Murial Armstrong Arnold of Lake Worth, Florida.
Robert married Janice Abell on October 5, 1946 at The First Baptist Church of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
From 1942 to 1946 Bob served in the military—first in the US Naval Reserve and then the US Army Air Corps. He served as a flight engineer on C46 planes and was a trainer of glider pilots in WW II.
After his service in the military, Bob worked for thirty-two years as a lineman for the New England Telephone Company, retiring in 1984.
From 1955 until 1984, Bob was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church in Fitchburg, MA. Bob sang in the church choir. He was a weekly leader in the Christian Service Brigade ministry of their church as well as in their annual summer camps. After retirement, he volunteered his time and energies each summer to help in the kitchen of Monadnock Bible Conference Center in Jaffrey, NH.
Since 2000, he has been a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Greenville, SC.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Janice Abell. He leaves four children and their spouses: Robert Bradley Arnold (Carol) of Lunenburg, MA, David Whittle Arnold (Karlene) of Kittery ME, Bruce Judson Arnold (Virginia) of Greenville, SC, and Deborah Christine Arnold Latham (John) of Mechanicsburg, PA.
He leaves twelve grandchildren: Alicia Arnold Rattin (Isaac) of Southbridge, MA, Jonathan Arnold of Lunenburg, MA, Amelia Arnold Coburn (Mike) of Philadelphia, PA, Mark Arnold of Lunenburg MA, Scott Arnold (Shayna) of Harrisburg, PA, Elizabeth Arnold Daley (Daniel) of Harrisburg, PA, Nathan Arnold (Danielle) of Greenville, SC, Daniel Arnold (Jennifer) of Neunkirchen, Germany, Joel Arnold (Sarah) of Manila, Philippines, Samuel Arnold (Esther) of Greenville, SC, Matthew Latham of Mountain Home AFB, ID, and Micah Latham (Amanda) of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Robert also leaves 18 great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Hudson, Lydia, and Meredith Rattin; Hannah and Kayla Arnold; Joshua and Eli Daley; Caleb, Lucy, Phillip, and Silas Arnold; Jeremy, Zachary, and Caroline Arnold; Robert James Arnold (named after his great-grandfather on 9/18/17); and Elias and Judah Latham.
Robert is survived by one sister, Ruth (Arnold) Abell of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, one brother John Arnold of Apache Junction, Arizona, and many nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his two brothers, Raymond Arnold Jr. and Bill Arnold.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 115 Cedar Lane Road, Greenville, SC. Pastor Mark Minnick will be officiating.
Visitation will precede the service from 5:30-6:45 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in the Educational Wing. Internment, with military honors, will be on Tuesday, December 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Graceland East Memorial Park, 2206 Woodruff Road, Simpsonville, SC.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the building project for Bob Jones Memorial Bible College in Manila where Bob’s grandson, Joel Arnold, serves as a missionary teacher.
