Rita Fay Engel

Rita Fay Engel, 69, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at home in Greenville, SC.

She was born December 10th, 1955 to Broadus and Mary Mathis in Greenville, SC where she lived until moving to Dayton, Ohio during her early teens. The family moved around as her father was in the Air Force before settling back in Greenville finishing his career at Donaldson AFB. 

She was a loving caregiver in nursing facilities, and private residences in the Greenville area for almost 20 years. The family would like to extend a deep appreciation to the staff at Magnolia Manor where she stayed for the past 6 months before coming back home to rest and be attended to by her devoted and loving husband John Engel to whom she was married for over 46 years. 

Rita loved her pets, and found great joy from her dog Abby, and cat Alfie. She is survived by her husband John Engel, daughter Theris Carter, Three grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren as well as her brothers and sisters; Frankie Mathis, Donna Jones, Diane Williams, Joyce Warren, and Jerry Mathis. She was preceded in death by her parents Broadus and Mary Mathis, and her daughter Karen Carter. 

The family will be holding a memorial service for her at First Assembly of God in Easley, SC with a date to be determined.
