Rita K. Buchanan

September 25, 1962 — August 1, 2024

Simpsonville, SC

Rita K. Buchanan, a beacon of love and laughter, passed away on August 1, 2024, in Simpsonville, SC, at the age of 61. Born on September 25, 1962, in Kokomo, IN, Rita's life was a testament to the joy and courage she brought into the world.

Rita's journey began as the cherished daughter of Donald and Barbara Etherington and grew up alongside her sisters Brenda, Addie, and the late Shelley Etherington. After graduating from Western High School in Russiaville, IN, in 1981, Rita's path led her to a fulfilling career where she ran an in-home daycare, touching the lives of many families with her nurturing spirit. Later, she transitioned to the medical field, working as a secretary until her retirement, which allowed her to dedicate herself to her true passion—being a full-time nana.

On October 15, 1983, Rita married William K. Buchanan, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. Their daughters, Lindsey Buchanan (engaged to Clayton Gephart) and Amber Broman (formerly married to Corey Broman), were the center of Rita's world. She was a guiding star to her grandchildren, Adam Walker (Alyssa), Mackenzie, Aiden, Karlie Mae Broman, and Maddie Buchanan-Gephart, and she held a special place in her heart for her great-granddaughter-to-be, Paisley Renee Walker, who is due in January of 2025. Rita was a source of strength and comfort, even as she mourned the loss of her beloved grandchildren, Sierra Walker-Buchanan, William "Chandler" Walker, and Khloe Broman.

Rita's family circle extended to her close cousin JoAnn, her Aunt Mary Meadows (married to Darrell), and the memories of her late Uncle Bobby Etherington and grandparents Freida and Russell Etherington. She was a cherished relative and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love in the hearts of her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

Rita's home was her sanctuary, where she cultivated a beautiful garden and decorated it with whimsical gnomes for every season and holiday. Her patio was her haven, a place where she could be found admiring her flowers and savoring the simple pleasures of life. Rita's love for her grandchildren was boundless; she reveled in watching them play sports and dance.

Known for her infectious humor and courageous spirit, Rita faced life's challenges with a smile and a determination that inspired all who knew her. She had a knack for making every moment count, whether she was spending time with friends and family or enjoying a good frozen margarita.

Rita K. Buchanan lived a life rich in experiences and relationships. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and the courage to face each day with optimism. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory will continue to be a guiding light for her family and friends.

As the sun sets on Rita's earthly journey, her spirit will live on in the blooming flowers of her garden, the laughter of her grandchildren, and the countless memories shared with those she loved. Her life was a beautiful garden where love grew in abundance, and though she has left this world, the seeds of her kindness and joy will blossom for generations to come.

A celebration of life for family and friends to pay their respects and share their memories will be held at a later date, per Rita's wishes.
