Richard "Red" Anthony Whitten, 83, passed away unexpectedly at his home, Monday, July 17, 2017. Richard was born in Macon, Ga. He graduated from Lanier High School and then Clemson College, where as fullback he led the football team in rushing yards. Then he served in the U.S. Air Force and earned the honor of All-American during his three years on the football team. Richard subsequently relocated to Danville, Va, where he served as Director of Quality at Dan River Mills until retirement. He was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle, the North Main Baptist Church, and after moving to Moore, SC, Richard was an active member of Redeemer Presbyterian until his passing. He is pre-deceased by a brother, Harold "Andy" Whitten, a daughter, Angela Whitten, and his wife of thirty years, Joetta. Richard is survived by daughters, Mary Robinson (George) and Valerie Testerman of Spartanburg, SC, Andrea Loftis (Dennis) of Danville, Scott Williams of Vinton, Va., David Whitten (Kathy) of Woodbine, Ga., and Rick Whitten (Sue) and Michael Whitten (Lynneth) of Macon, Ga., sisters Delores Ballard (Jack) and Patricia Brickle Poole of Macon. Also surviving are the numerous grandchildren, great grand-children, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at North Main Baptist Church, Saturday, July 29, from 11 a.m until 12 p.m, immediately followed by a memorial service. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 9, 6:30 p.m at Redeemer Presbyterian in Moore, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Richard's memory be made to Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 3890 Moore Duncan Hwy, Moore, SC 29369.
