Richard Fewell Mackintosh, age 78, passed away peacefully early on August 27, 2024. Richard was born on April 15, 1946 in Pensacola, Florida to Dr. Robert Harley Mackintosh and Mary Elizabeth Fewell Mackintosh.
Richard earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology at Erskine College, a Bachelors of Divinity at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, a Masters of Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and a Masters in Social Work at Rutgers University. He pastored The Plumsted Presbyterian Church in New Egypt, New Jersey for two years, then specialized as a psychiatric social worker for the rest of his career. He worked in child and adolescent mental health at Anderson Mental Health Center and Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital. He continued in psychiatric social work at Perry Correctional Institution, where he also assisted the chaplain and supported the religious practices of the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim inmates.
Richard loved reading about history, particularly World War II, and loved woodworking. His most treasured work was teaching hand tool woodworking to children and teenagers, which he did upon retirement at the Greenville Woodworking Guild, the Living History Farm at Roper Mountain Science Center, and Falling Creek Camp for Boys. Upon his retirement from teaching at the Woodworking Guild, he was honored for teaching woodworking to more than 700 teens.
Richard was a member of Taylors Masonic Lodge and the Greenville Scottish Rite. He was also a South Carolina State Constable and supported the State Law Enforcement Division.
Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Paula Carol Vanderbeek Mackintosh, their children Adrienne Anne Mackintosh McNeill (Patrick) and Ian Frank Mackintosh (Celia) and four grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Carol McNeill, Eleanor Elizabeth Mackintosh, Daniel Christian Harley McNeill and Rhys Samuel Malcolm Mackintosh. He is also survived by his brothers Robert Harley Mackintosh, Jr. (Kathy) and John Douglas Mackintosh (Sharon) and other extended family.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, Greer, SC. Richard has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, SC.
