Richard Lyle Hanks, son of the late George and Veda Hanks, went to be with his Lord and Savior after a brief and courageous battle with cancer on December 14, 2022. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob Barlow and Jim Hanks; and a very special granddaughter Tiffany Hanks. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Hanks; daughter Lynnann Hanks; step daughter Billie Threatt (Mica); sister Mary Beth Hanks Marquiess (John) and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Richard was a member of the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church for over 50 years. He loved the Lord, and above all things, he loved to do the Lord’s work. In every aspect of his life, he strove to help others live their best and happiest lives. He was exceptionally proud of his 40 plus years of sobriety, and it was his calling in life to help everyone who was willing to achieve their own sobriety and inner peace. Day or night, near or far, if a fellow man needed his help, he was there – no questions asked.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather – he cherished every moment that he spent with his grandchildren, and his wife Ellen was the light of his life. To some, he may have come across as a bit direct or blunt, but deep down, he was as loving and caring as a man could be. He absolutely melted in the presence of his great-grandchildren, who he adored, and he always had candies at the ready for them. When he wasn’t spending time with his family, he could be found on the golf course. He was a proud member of the Golden Boys at Pebble Creek Country Club, where he met many a lifelong friend.
Richard was an intelligent and curious man, whose thirst for knowledge never ceased. He took many adult education courses at Furman University, and especially enjoyed learning about other cultures and religions around the world.
He loved to read, especially the works of John Grisham and he never went anywhere without a book. His love of reading carried over into his work – he spent many years as a sales manager for a major publishing company.
