Richard A. Derr Jr., 71, passed away on October 19, 2022, at his home in Taylors, South Carolina after a courageous battle with cancer.
Rick was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Portville, New York before moving to Middlebury, Connecticut with his family in 1967. He lived in Bethlehem, Connecticut with his wife and children for 30 years. He had recently moved with his wife to South Carolina within the past year.
He graduated from Suffield Academy and attended Alfred University. Rick had a successful career in banking and auto financing. He was very active in the Bethlehem Lions Club where he served twice as president. Rick coached Woodbury/Bethlehem Girls Youth soccer for 5 years and was an active participant with the Woodbury Troop 54 Boy Scouts of America.
An avid nature lover, Rick enjoyed bird watching and fishing with his longtime friend, Ralph. He also enjoyed spending time with family on Schroon Lake in Adirondack, NY, and Cape Cod.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Leslie Derr, his son Richard Derr III and his wife Marilyn, daughter Katelyn Derr (Tim Joyce) and stepdaughter Nicole Laurencelle and her partner Marc Goupil.
He leaves his loving sisters Sandra Dolan (Robert) of Falmouth MA, Barbara Derr of Waltham, MA, Kathleen Nunes (Peter) of Redding Shores, FL, and his sister-in-law Randi Kearns (John). He also leaves a niece, nephews, and numerous cousins.
Rick was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Barbara (Foote) Derr, and his brother Stephen M. Derr.
A private memorial service will be held at the family’s convenience.
