Preston Glen Thomas, 85, of Simpsonville, SC, husband of Joan Hamby Thomas, died Monday April 16, 2018. Born and reared in Lilbert, Texas, he was the son of the late Charlie and Eva Thomas.
At age 19, Glen joined the U.S. Army Air Corps which became the U.S. Air Force. While stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base, Greenville, SC, he met and married Joan. He served in the Vietnam War and was instrumental in the establishment of the Cam Ranh Air Base. After his return, he was stationed at numerous bases in the United States and also had several international tours. Glen retired from the Air Force after 20 years with the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon retirement, Glen and his family moved to Simpsonville, SC where he worked for 3M Manufacturing Company for 22 years. In Simpsonville he was a Shriner and a member of First Baptist Simpsonville. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Jeanne Thomas Gettys (Rod) of Greenville and Susan Thomas Cooney (Kimball) of Wellington, CO. He is also survived by grandchildren Colton Cooney, Caroline Gettys, and Jake Cooney, a sister Charlene Duke and a brother Frank Thomas. He was predeceased by his siblings Albert Thomas, Treva Whitaker, and Sybil Parsons.
Visitation will be held on Friday April 20th at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Simpsonville, 3 Hedge St., Simpsonville, SC, 29681, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenville Shriners Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605, or the charity of one’s choice.
