Philip Lovin Elliott, Jr., known affectionately as Phil to his friends and family, passed away on October 23, 2024, in Greenville, SC. Born on February 2, 1934, in Cullowhee, NC, Phil was a man of wisdom, humor, and love, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Phil's life was one of dedication and service, both to his family and to the field of education. He shared 56 and a half wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Kathryn (Chambers) Elliott, fondly known as Kacky. Together, they raised two children, Evelyn Hope Elliott and Philip Lovin Elliott III, who were the pride and joy of their life. Phil was a cherished brother to Rachel Elliott Churchill and brother-in-law to Barbara (Chambers) Ford and Gerry (Sparks) Emmert. Phil was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth Eleanor Elliott Oakes and Jayne Elliott Grady.
Phil's academic journey was marked by excellence and a passion for English literature. He attended Boiling Springs NC High School, finishing at Ben Lippen in Ashville. He earned an Associate of Arts from Gardner Web College, now University, his Bachelor of Arts degree at Furman University, his Master of Arts at the University of North Carolina, and went on to achieve a PhD in English from the University of Georgia. His love for teaching led him to a distinguished career, first at Wesleyan College, now University in North Carolina, and then at Furman University for 32 years in the English Department. His influence on students spanned generations, and his colleagues respected him for his insight and collegial spirit.
A lifelong learner and educator, Phil was also an active member of the NC/SC College English Teachers association, where he contributed to the advancement of English education in the Carolinas. His commitment to his profession was unwavering, and his legacy in the academic community is one of mentorship, scholarship, and kindness.
Phil's interests extended beyond the classroom. He was an avid reader, always with a book in hand, and he enjoyed playing golf, a sport that allowed him to form many lasting friendships. Travel held a special place in Phil and Kacky’s heart, both within the United States and abroad, as he believed in the power of new experiences to broaden the mind and enrich the soul. For relaxation he, family, extended family and later with friends went to Carolina beaches.
A man of faith, Phil was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church, where served as Lay reader, and sang in the choir, serving most recently on the Altar Guild with Kacky. His service to the church was a testament to his belief in community and his desire to give back to others.
Phil's sense of humor was legendary, and his ability to bring laughter to any situation was one of his most endearing qualities. He was a loving figure who could always be counted on for wise counsel and a warm embrace. His grandchildren, Jeff Elliott (Samantha), Dan Elliott (Miranda), Elspeth "Elspy" Elliott (Ray), and Amber Elliott Quinteros (Eddie) will remember him as a loving grandfather who cherished every moment spent with them. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, who will grow up hearing stories of their great-grandfather and remarkable life.
