Peter J. Potosky, 85, passed peacefully at his home in Greenville on Saturday, September 18, 2021. He was the husband of Sally Potosky, and the son of the late Peter Potosky and Jule Duda Potosky from Livingston New Jersey. As a music teacher, “Coach” Potosky was loved by his students. As a professional clarinet player, “Pete” Potosky was admired by his fellow musicians.
He was born on October 15, 1935, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was a teacher in New Jersey for Newark, Livingston, and West Orange, Boards of Education. He waited until age 43 to find the right girl and married the love of his life,
Sally Potosky. Pete was also a freelance musician and performed with the New Jersey Pops Orchestra. On retirement, they moved to Greenville, South Carolina.
There he performed with the Lakeside Concert Band, was concertmaster for the Greenville Concert Band, and principal clarinet for Foothills Philharmonic. In 2016, he sustained a traumatic brain injury and made a heroic effort to learn to walk and talk again. Though he had difficulty understanding words said to him, his powers of observation were great. He was able to joke and make others laugh.
In addition to music, Pete loved the visual world: beautiful scenery, the lines in a painting, watching a golf game. Known for his sense of humor, his generosity and gentle nature, he made others feel good about themselves. He was a sweet man who made a difference in a quiet way. He sent out ripples of kindness and positivity through whomever he met.
In addition to his wife Sally of 43 years, he is survived by sister in law Caroline McIntyre of Greenville, South Carolina; cousin Lee Parratt of Monroe, Connecticut; cousin Linda Leck and her husband Frank Leck and their children and families: Kenneth, Donald and Roger Leck and Mindy Leck Glaz, New Jersey.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 9 at 11:00am at Unity Church of Greenville. 207 E. Belvue Rd, Taylors, SC 29687. Social distancing and safe COVID practices are recommended.
