Patrick Fraser King, age 68, passed away on March 14, 2021, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital from coronavirus infection. He was the kind husband of Brenda King, with whom he lovingly shared 24 years of marriage. Born in Berlin, Germany, on May 19, 1952, he was the oldest son of US Army Air Force veteran Russell Fraser King and Marianne Irene King (née Marrgraff). Pat came to America as a toddler and moved around with his parents, who worked in the aerospace industry, living in Louisiana, California, and Florida.
A strategic thinker and bright intellectual, Pat graduated from Boston College with a B.S. in 1974, Ohio State University with a M.S. in 1976, Boston College with a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1980, and Boston University with an Executive MBA in 1982. Since 2005 Pat was employed by Michelin in Greenville, S.C. In 2012 Pat and Brenda moved to Clermont-Ferrand, France, where he worked as Global Strategist for over two years at Michelin world headquarters. His most recent position was Advanced Technologies Project Leader for Tweel Tire division in Greenville. Known as an inventor and visionary among his colleagues, Pat became the world’s expert on high-temperature Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, by merging his knowledge of chemistry, electronics, and the tire industry. An entrepreneur at heart, Pat also started a family business, Technologies ROI, which manufactures RFID tags used in construction equipment.
Pat was a down-to-earth, witty character who was always cheerful. A devout Christian, Pat was a member at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church of Simpsonville, and regularly worshipped with Brenda at Mauldin United Methodist Church. Pat had many interests, including racing his Yamaha motorcycle at Daytona International Speedway and rebuilding classic cars. He was a history buff and traveled much, amassing co-workers and friends around the globe. Pat was a compassionate husband, a devoted father, a wonderful friend and co-worker, who never accepted the status quo but always wanted to find a better way. Pat’s broad legacy includes a profound love for his family, his passion about the things he believed in, his deep insight into the world, and a generous capacity to find good in everyone he met. Pat himself was a cherished gift with a twinkle in his eye who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife Brenda, he is survived by children Kelly King (Chip Adams), Ross King (Stephanie), Derek King, and their mother Donna Hopkins; stepsons Ryan Cabral and Eric Cabral (Lacey Plants); grandchildren Haylie and Brendan King, step-grandchildren Ellie and Riley Plants; brothers Phillip King, Tom King, Tim King (Laura), and sister Patricia Miller (PK).
