Mrs. Nellie Grace Hood

May 13, 1930 — August 9, 2018

Nellie Grace Hood, 88, of Simpsonville, beloved wife of Bishop Joseph Hood, went home to be with the Lord on August 09, 2018.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years. She was predeceased by her daughter, Kathy Hood Grant, with whom she is undoubtedly having a joyous reunion. Mrs. Hood is also survived by three sons, Joseph Hood, Jr. (Theresa) of Austin, TX; Tom Hood (Kathy) of Greenville; and David Hood (Nikki) of Clemson. She was also the proud Granny to 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She spent much of her life – over 60 years – in the ministry as the wife of an evangelist and pastor spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every corner of the country and the world. She served in her capacity as a pastor’s wife in churches in South Carolina, Ohio, Minnesota, Texas, and Missouri.

Mrs. Hood attended Parker High School in Greenville and was married in Holy Matrimony on April 14, 1949, in Anderson at the parsonage of the Osborne Avenue Church of God. The pair embarked on a life of ministry that took them from Vaucluse (SC) to Leadwood (MO) to Wichita Falls (TX) and many stops in betwen. At two of those stops, she was given what she called her “daughters in love” in Kathy and Theresa. The third daughter in love (Nikki) came after her retirement.

During the 1980’s she was the Director of the daycare at the Simpsonville Church of God. Known as Mama Hood to all who came into contact with her, she impacted the lives of hundreds of children and their parents. Whether it was making her prized butter biscuits for morning breakfast or loving on all of her babies, she was loved by all.

She continued to work in the church – she was a secretary at the Greer Church of God and joined her husband in conducting Kid’s Krusades across the state of South Carolina.

Mrs. Hood spent the latter part of her life doting on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life and her graduation to a higher plane will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauldin Church of God with the Reverend Bobby Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concerned Citizens for Animals, Simpsonville.
