Nancy Segar Patterson

May 19, 1922 — September 9, 2013

Nancy Segar Patterson, wife of Dr. William C. Patterson, of 303 Milstead Way in Greenville, South Carolina, died on September 9, 2013. She was born on May 19, 1922 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and was the daughter of the late Niles Lucas Segar and Nellie Mae Bayer Segar.  Mrs. Patterson spent her childhood in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. She adored her older sister, the late Jane Segar Longenecker.

Mrs. Patterson graduated from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She lost her first husband, Allison Chapin, when he was killed serving in World War II.  On June 26, 1947 she married her husband, Bill, and they were devoted to each other for 66 years.

Mrs. Patterson taught school in Hanover, Highspire, and Hershey, Pennsylvania before moving to College Park, Maryland, and then to Athens, Georgia in 1961.  In 1967 she became a teacher and then director of the First Presbyterian Church Weekday School in Athens, where she taught for nearly 20 years. She loved teaching little children and began each school day with a personal prayer in the church sanctuary that the day would be a good and safe one for the children and teachers.

Upon her retirement, Mrs. Patterson volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital and served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was an active member at First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder there and was a faithful member of the choir. Mrs. Patterson will be remembered by her devotion to God, her husband, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She was a caring friend and will be remembered for her gifts of food, notes sent to many, and, most of all, for her sweet smile. She will be greatly missed.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Patterson is survived by her children William Segar Patterson, Susan Patterson Robbins (James), Steven Creigh Patterson (Joy) and Nancy Patterson Hertha (Douglas). She has eight grandchildren:  David, Michael, and Lauren Robbins, Matt (Ginni) and Ben (Terryn) Patterson, Ginny Patterson Chellis (the Rev. Rossiter Chellis), and Jamie and Robert Hertha. She has one great-grandchild, Mary Patterson.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 14, at Rolling Green Village, 1 Hoke Smith Boulevard in Greenville, South Carolina. The Reverend Dave Sems will officiate, assisted by Chaplain Dan Groves.  A visitation will be held following the service.
