Mim Rankin, 87, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016. She spent the last three years of her life in the comfort of an assisted living facility in Greenville, SC.
Mim was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bothwell Jones, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL. She attended Ward Belmont Junior College in Nashville, TN, and graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles A. Rankin Jr, of Asheville. During their 65 years of marriage, Dr. Rankin’s service in the US Naval Medical Corps carried their growing family to many new destinations, such as the US Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, FL, the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, the US Naval Station Hospital in Naples, Italy, the US Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, and the US Naval Hospital at Memphis in Millington, TN. The family finally made Asheville their permanent home in 1967, where Dr. Rankin went into private practice.
Mim is also survived by daughter, Linda Lee Howard, her husband Chris and granddaughter Katherine, of Dickson, TN; daughter Patty Chase, her husband Ed and grandchildren, Heather, Amanda, Melissa, Andrew and Joseph of Gastonia, NC; son Charles Rankin III, his wife Deborah and grandchildren, Tim, Brian, Caroline and Emily of Greenville, SC; and Jeff Rankin and Marlo Peters of Sacramento, CA. Mim is also survived by four great-grandchildren, and her sister, Ella Mae Jones Chadbourne of Daytona Beach, FL, and preceded in death by her brother, Lee B. Jones III.
The Rankins have lived in Asheville for almost 50 years, where Mim was very active in the local community. She was a Founding Mother of the Health Adventure and a member and volunteer with the Asheville Art Museum. She was an active member of the Buncombe County Medical Auxiliary and of the Asheville PEO Chapter AC. Mim and her husband were active members of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church where she served on several committees, taught Sunday School, and was an Elder for many years.
After a small family Memorial Service, Mim will be interred at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC, 28215.
