Michael Compton

October 15, 1947 — January 17, 2023

Michael Compton was born on October 15, 1947, in the City of Newark, New Jersey to the late Mary L. Compton and Walter G. Compton of the City of Orange, New Jersey. He passed away at his home in Greenville, South Carolina on January 17, 2023. Although Michael was afflicted with polio at an early age, that did not stop him from doing anything he wanted to do in life. When other kids were riding bikes, Michael adapted a two-wheel bicycle by adjusting the pedals so he could ride with the big kids. Michael always had a love of music, and at Orange High School he played the clarinet in the marching band. In 1979, Michael went to South Carolina to visit a friend and fell in love with the state.  He moved to South Carolina and only returned to New Jersey for short visits.  Michael worked as a programmer and Senior Systems Engineer for MetLife from January 1979 until May 2010--31 years and 5 months, until he retired to enjoy his true love of music.
Michael thrived in retirement! He committed his time and talents to serving as a Sound Engineer for the LEAF festivals in Black Mountain, North Carolina and for numerous contra dance communities, regionally and as far away as Upstate New York. He loved his music--and his music friends. He blended his music and technical skills through his work with sound systems.
In the early 80’s he was invited to a Furman football game and became a Furman fan for life. He supported Furman sports teams throughout the years and was known for his incredible appetite at Furman tailgate parties. He especially enjoyed following women’s basketball, both at the collegiate and pro levels.
Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory his sister Carol Perkins, his niece Olivia Perkins, and his nephew Eric Perkins, all of Orange, New Jersey.  Also, there are his close friends Melissa Moore (Michael's caretaker), John Duggan, Michael Kellett, Jenna Robinson, Lynne Shackelford, and Bruce Brown, whom Michael relied on and loved dearly. In addition, Michael leaves behind his maternal aunt, Esther Jean Porter of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and his paternal uncle, William Compton of Laurelton, New York,
along with many other cousins and friends, especially his music friends. Michael led a full and fiercely independent life that he shared with his family, music communities, and friends. Michael chose to be cremated and requested that only a small private family service be held. His music community will honor his memory in the future. To honor his memory and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LEAF
Global Arts in Asheville, North Carolina, the Furman Athletics Fund at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, or the charity of your choice.
