Mical Ezra Embler, 69, finished his earthly race and ran into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 22, 2021 after being diagnosed 15 days earlier with metastatic liver cancer.
He was an adoring, entertaining, and faithful husband to the love of his life, Kim Mann Embler for 35 years. Together they raised two gifted and talented daughters, Elizabeth Embler Sullivan (Craig) and Erin Embler Galloway. He will forever be “Pop” to his two cherished grandsons, Flash Nesbitt Galloway and Ezra Owen Sullivan. Also surviving are his three siblings: Marc Embler (Ruth Marie), Mitchell Embler (Kim), and Julie Embler Buchanan (Thom). Two incredibly special friends were like brothers to him, Marc Bailey and Tom Bigby.
Left with a huge void are Mical’s constant companions, his Border Collies, Rango, Maddie, and Lucy. At one time, Mical had five dogs who ran with him almost every day. He spent his recent years training dogs and playing with his grandsons.
Mical grew up at Berea First Baptist Church and was a member at NewSpring Church. He was a warrior for Christ and volunteered at Fuse, NewSpring’s student ministry. He spent nine years of vacation time at the Gauntlet—a student summer camp—where he mentored, witnessed, and guided young men to Christ. Many lifelong friends were created with these young men.
Mical was an outstanding runner who worked tirelessly to become the best in his field. His efforts paid off as he became the first Berea High School runner to go to college on a track scholarship. He was named in Berea High School’s Hall of Fame for his participation in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. Mical was a standout runner at Charleston Southern University (formerly Baptist College), where he received his Bachelor of Science. Several years after starting his career as a high school teacher, he developed an interest in accounting, so he enrolled in classes at Clemson University and received his Master of Arts at Furman University in 1978. Within just three years he received his certified public accountant license, and five years later he opened his own firm, which he would manage in Greenville for the next 25 years. Mical was a member of the South Carolina Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. After college, he spent several years running races for the Greenville Track Club, racing bicycles (the first time he raced Mt. Mitchell, he finished in the top five), and was a second degree blackbelt. He spent his family years coaching his girls’ soccer teams and running with his family. He enjoyed bringing weekly lunches to Elizabeth and Erin through elementary school where he also shared his time reading stories to their classes. His animated voices and antics were fun for all.
Mical served on the Board of the Greenville Track Club Elite and was treasurer from 2013 to his passing. He was President and owner of Mical E. Embler CPA. As a driven professional, his work ethic was unmatched. Mical was quite a character and a friend to many. It has been rumored that he kept several out of jail for tax evasion.
Mical will be remembered as a truly gifted and unique friend. He never met a stranger and had no pretense.
