On August 5, 2023, in Greenville, SC, Maureen O’Hara Sauls Crawford, a mother, grandmother, friend, and maybe even foe, depending on which Gemini you got, said her final goodbye. Born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 26, 1942, Maureen loved food, family, and fun times. In her heyday, she was known for her sense of fashion, her wickedness at the card table, and her ability to throw down in the kitchen. She was an avid football fan and had a sharp sense of humor that kept everyone laughing until the end. Most importantly, everyone knew Maureen as a whip-smart woman who could easily best anyone in a test of knowledge; Jeopardy being one of her all-time favorite shows.
After graduating top 10 in her class at Huntington High School she moved from Newport News, Virginia to New York where she continued to pursue her education including completing a course in accounting at Long Island University. She contributed her smarts and talents in several fields but eventually retired from the phone company where she spent over 15 years of her career. Not being satisfied with early retirement, she went on to work for Congressman Major Owens of New York as a receptionist and research assistant. Over the course of her life, Maureen had the opportunity to call Virginia, New York, South Carolina, the DC metropolitan area as well as Texas home.
She will be dearly missed by the family she leaves behind including her sister Wanser Green, her son Eric Crawford and two daughters Candace Crawford (Elisabeth) and Eboni Crawford. Maureen was fortunate to welcome into the world 10 grandchildren: Nicole Johnson Harris, John Brandon Sullivan, Eric Crawford, Jr, Natalie Crawford, Anthony Halverson; Ian Crawford-Morse and Henry Crawford-Morse; Kamesha Beaty, Keland Hailey, Darien Crawford, and Deshanti Martin.. She was very blessed to know nine of her great-grandchildren: Messiah Thompson, Nygeriah Thompson, Khyli Williford, Jayland Hailey, Braden Hailey, Bentley Hailey, Ivyana Richardson, Daliyah Richardson, and Daryl Baker. She also cherished an abundance of nieces, nephews, and special friends.
The family will be receiving friends and family at the home of her youngest daughter Eboni Crawford in Greenville, SC, and will be hosting Maureen’s farewell celebration at 5 pm on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at the American Legion in Anderson, South Carolina.
