Mary Jean Hill Smith, known as Jean to all who loved her, was a beacon of light and love in the lives of those who had the privilege to know her. Born on April 1, 1948, in Greenville, SC, Jean passed away on April 29, 2023, in the same town she had called home for her entire life. Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who touched countless lives with her faithfulness and kindness.
Jean was blessed to share 50 years of marriage with her husband, William Raymond Smith. Together, they raised three beautiful daughters, Mary Ann Smith and Kimberley Kay Hughes, both of Greenville, and the late Tammy Marie Smith-Redding. Jean was also a doting grandmother to Lee Smith, III, Amber Cole, Austin Nash, Zach Nash, Alex Smith, Breyden Broome, and Bella Broome. Her legacy of love continues to live on through her great-grandchildren, Jax Nash, Kason Nash, Bryleigh Smith, and Avianna Smith.
Jean was a caregiver by nature, and she spent her life nurturing and guiding the young ones entrusted to her care. She had a hand in raising many children, not just her own, and her influence will be felt for generations to come.
Jean's faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was a lifetime member of the Woodside Church of God in Greenville, SC. Her commitment to her church community was evident in her involvement with various ministries, most notably singing in the choir. Jean's voice was a testament to the joy and love she found in her relationship with the Lord, and she used her talents to inspire and uplift those around her.
Those who knew Jean would describe her as loving, faith-filled, and generous. Her heart was always open to those in need, and she never hesitated to lend a helping hand or offer a comforting word. Jean's life was a living testimony to the transformative power of Christ's love, and she was an example to all of what it means to live a life of service and devotion to God.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Mary Jean Hill Smith, let us remember the many ways that she touched our lives and the lives of those around her. Let us give thanks for her unwavering faith, her boundless love, and her generous spirit. Let us also take comfort in the knowledge that Jean now rests in the loving arms of her Savior, reunited with her beloved daughter Tammy and all those who have gone before her.
In the days and weeks to come, may we honor Jean's memory by striving to live our own lives with the same love, faith, and generosity that she demonstrated every day. May we carry her legacy forward, sharing the love of Christ with those around us and making the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time. Amen.
