Mary Joan Hamby Thomas

Joan Hamby Thomas, 88, of Simpsonville, SC, wife of the late Preston Glen Thomas, died
Thursday December 22, 2022. Born and reared in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the
late Ralph and Bonnie Hamby. Following her graduation from Parker High School, she worked for Southern Bell. After her marriage, she was an Air Force wife for 20 years and lived in numerous locations in the United States and abroad. When Glen retired from the Air Force, they settled in Simpsonville where she continued her career with the Internal Revenue Service until her retirement. A lifelong Baptist, Joan was a member of First Baptist Simpsonville. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughters Jeanne Thomas Gettys (Rod) of Greenville and Susan Thomas Cooney (Kimball) of Wellington, CO. She is also survived by grandchildren Emmitt Cooney, Jake Cooney, and Caroline Gettys, and a great granddaughter Adelaide Gettys. She was predeceased by her siblings, R.L. Hamby, Earl Hamby, Betty Bagwell, and Jerry Hamby.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Greenville Shriners Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605, or the charity of one’s choice.
