MJ was the daughter of the late George and Ruby Watkins. She was the youngest of five siblings, predeceased by her sisters Teresa Wincey, Jean McKinney, and Jackie Beacham, and survived by her brother, Danny Watkins. MJ was the cherished wife of John Moore and the loving mother of Jane Dunagan, Jay (Jackie) Pinson, and Chuck Pinson. She was also a proud grandmother to Nathan Craven, Cody Pinson, and Justin Pinson.

MJ attended high school in Greenwood, SC, where she first discovered her passion for design and sewing. This passion led her to own and operate MJ's Design and Alterations for 17 years. She was well-known in the community as a talented dress designer and seamstress, creating beautiful garments that were cherished by her clients.
