Martin “Mac” Lawrence Makara, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, October 25, 2024 at the McCall Hospice House of Greenville. Born on November 19, 1938 in Weston, Pennsylvania, Mac was the son of the late Andrew and Anna Makara. He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked at the Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, SC. He was retired from the Greenville Water department where he worked for 30 years as an accountant. Mac also served as a volunteer fireman for the Duncan Chapel Fire Department.
Mac was a fan of all sports but especially enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. He loved being outdoors whether hunting, landscaping, or caring for his family members’ various pets. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his stepmother, Mary Phillips Makara; two sisters, Dorothy Denke and Verna Pallaver; four brothers, Stephen, John, Thomas, and James Makara; stepbrother, John Palushock; two stepsisters, Catherine Wolfe, and Dorothy Adamchick; and two nephews, Stephen J. Supon Jr., and Brian Townsend.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Shirley J. Makara and his son, Martin L. Makara, Jr. of Greenville SC; two sisters-in-law, Lynda Waldrep of Summerfield NC and Carole Townsend of Greenville SC; four nieces Vicki Townsend, Susan Townsend, Lyndsey Waldrep, and Kathleen Kapes of
Weston PA; three nephews, Larry Supon of Weston PA, Mark Townsend of Greer SC; George Waldrep III of Lewisburg PA. Additionally, he is survived by two great-nieces: Danni Caldwell and Sydney Butler; and great-nephews, Rusty Townsend of Atlanta GA and Matthew Williams of Greenville SC.
