Martha Ann Athol, 89, of Greenville, SC, died Sunday, February 6, 2022.
Martha was born in Charlottesville, VA on December 9, 1932, daughter of the late Spero John and Andriana (Andreou) Vames. On May 1, 1960 she married the love of her life, Patrick John Athol, who preceded her in death in January 2003.
Martha received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a MA in Art History from Duquesne University. She was a fine artist and taught art at the primary school through university levels. She loved to travel, swim, read, dance, but above all to create. She was always curious, eager to experience and learn new things, and quick with a laugh and a smile. She loved her family and sharing the language, history, and customs of her Greek heritage with them.
Martha is survived by her daughter Lisa (Paul) Hughes of Greenville, and sons Barrie (Elizabeth) Athol of Pittsburgh, PA and Toby (Diana) Athol of Lake Worth, FL; five grandchildren Andrianna (Zander), Elizabeth (Garth), William, Katheryn, and Margaret; and one great-grandchild Ezra.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Martha may be made to the Daughters of Penelope at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 406 North Academy Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
