Margaret (Maggie) Shaddix passed away Tuesday 21st November after a long illness. She was born in Birmingham. Alabama, and spent her adult life in Greenville. She married her University of Alabama college sweetheart and was a wonderful mother to their four children together. Maggie could be described as a cross between Beverly D’Angelo, Goldie Hawn, and Dolly Parton. Her big laugh and upbeat chatter could usually be heard before she was seen.
Hiking was a passion for her, and she was most at home and happy when up in the mountains. She was a literature enthusiast with enough class credits at Furman to get her PhD; but it won’t surprise anyone who knew her to find out that she never bothered to write a dissertation. Maggie could be spotted running errands around town with the top down on her convertible, huge sunglasses and wild blonde hair with the Beatles blasting, and always a big warm wide smile for everyone she met. Possibly wearing a mink coat in July - but that was just Maggie. She was a schoolteacher for many years; her unique irreverent style endeared her to all of her students, but possibly not the school administration offices. Maggie believed in all of her students and always found a way to connect. She had an ability to inspire children with a love of reading, and as a special education teacher it wasn’t unusual for her students to leap ahead a few years of reading levels in just one school year. Maggie at her best was irreverent and bold, glamorous and fun, empathetic and inquisitive, kind and caring, carefree and inspiring. She is survived by her four children, Melvin in Denver, Rachael, in London (UK), Katie in Charlotte, and James in Pennsylvania as well as her sister Della in Mobile, AL. She will be buried with her family in Hickory Hill cemetery in Alabama, and a memorial will be held in the spring.
Thank you
